Comforters and down
A comforter, generally one filled with down, is one of the most popular choices because it is light weight and also incredibly warm. It is possible to have warmth without weight, and you will still never feel too cold while sleeping. Many different kinds of down are available. There are several variations in the quality of down that are available. The least expensive comforters are filled with a combination of down and feathers, while just goose down is the most expensive fill. Be sure to check the label for the fill power. This number will tell you how many ounces of down are in the comforter so you can determine how warm the comforter will be. You will also be able to choose the baffle pattern you prefer. The more tightly the feathers are held together, the warmer the comforter will be because the feathers will not all fall to the end of the comforter leaving empty places.

Fleece: nature's answer to synthetic materials!
You can have the same comforting feeling you did when you were a child when you snuggle up to a fleece blanket. Fleece throws are fun to have when at home. You can drape them over the back of your couch or at the end of your bed for extra warmth at night. There are other uses people get our of their fleece blankets like covering end tables and making throw pillows or travel pillows.

How the rating of comforters is determined
The rating of comforters is determined by the number of down clusters in the filling of a comforter. The purest comforters are about 95 percent down, although the label may say 100 percent. In the U.S., some state regulations allow a comforter with a content of down as low as 75 percent to be labeled as 100 percent. Small feathers often get mixed in with the down, and it is very difficult to remove them. While a comforter that is 75 percent down will be cozy and wonderfully warm, we still want to know what is inside our comforters. The down collected from the Eider duck, known as Eiderdown, used to be the standard filling for a down comforter. These days, down from the Icelandic wild Eider is in very limited supply due to its protection from commercial harvesting. There are still a select few Eiderdown comforters produced from feathers collected from empty nests, but these are very rare and very expensive.

They are also cashing in successfully on selling great platform beds to people with chronic back pain and other joint and bone conditions.

Beds of the past
In the 16th and 17th centuries, mattresses were usually stuffed with down or straw and placed on a latticework of rope. The cast iron beds and cotton mattress appeared in the late 19th century. This latter combination of materials was less attractive to insects, which before were considered normal in the sleeping quarters.
